WHO WE ARE

Committed to quality eyewear and eyecare

We're a unique owner run practice that combines high quality eyewear with a hospital-level of clinical expertise in a warm, relaxed and friendly environment. Dr Michael Johnson and Mrs Hayley Johnson (née Furze) established the practice because they were frustrated that standards of care were being compromised, and it was increasingly difficult to get quality eyewear and unbiased professional advice on lenses and frames.

With us, it's personal

We think that people want their eyes cared for by someone they trust, so they have confidence that any advice offered will be given with genuine consideration for their best interests. It is our aim to understand clients and their concerns, remembering that they are people, and not simply patients to be fixed or customers to be sold products.

Michael completed his basic clinical training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and was later awarded a doctorate by the University of Wales for his work in research. He is the youngest ever recipient of a Fellowship of the College of Optometrists, which is their highest qualification, as an acknowledgement of accomplishments and commitment to the profession.

For many years he was responsible for managing complex optical and medical eye problems in the optometry department and medical clinics at Bristol Eye Hospital. He has previously led university Master’s degree courses for national and international students, and worked as an advisor overseeing government-funded education and training for all UK registered optometrists. Michael has published widely in educational and scientific journals, and is regularly invited to present at conferences.

At university, Michael was the athletics captain, and competed at an international level as a runner until his mid-30s.

Hayley was previously the resident optometrist in the Cardiff University Eye Clinic where hundreds of undergraduate students benefited from her expertise and encouragement.

She helped to develop the evidential support, training and assessment methods for the widely acclaimed Welsh Low Vision Service. This provides a community service that was traditionally undertaken within hospitals. It has proven to be effective, cost-efficient, and is preferred by users who appreciate the convenience and reduction in appointment delays.

Hayley developed her specialist clinical skills working alongside ophthalmologists at Bristol Eye Hospital. She is qualified as an Independent Prescriber, which allows her to prescribe medicines to treat eye disease.

Outside of work Hayley enjoys running and long walks, in part because it makes the cake at the end of the day taste so much better. She also loves to bake and play the piano.
